Overview
We were approached with one of the most challenging and exciting projects I've been lucky to put my hands on: re-designing a browser-based photo-voltaic systems design tool. It became one of the most exciting, demanding and rewarding projects, from research to ideation, wireframing, and prototyping while also giving me the opportunity for learning about a new industry and acquiring new skills as well as a whole new perspective.
The Challenge
The existing solar design tool had a complex interface that was intimidating for new users, with a steep learning curve that prevented market expansion. The client needed to modernize the platform while maintaining functionality for power users.
The Solution
Through extensive user research and iterative design, we created an intuitive interface with a flexible workflow that accommodated both beginners and advanced users. We implemented a guided onboarding process and contextual help that reduced training time significantly.
Business Impact
Increase in new user onboarding completion
Reduction in time to complete designs
Average user rating after redesign
1. Learning
Before starting the research and design processes, the team had to focus - during the first two weeks of the project - on gaining proficiency in the state of the solar energy industry, the field's jargon, and a lot of technical matters related to photovoltaic systems and electricity in general.
2. Exploration
After learning about the solar-energy industry we focused on understanding the current stage and offer of the product.
3. The Users
By interviewing users of the platform and business stakeholders we were able to inform the creation of User Personas.
